Captured terrorist says Israelis were specifically targeted in Mumbai

Islamist terrorist Azzam Amir Kassab, 21: A brutal killing machine captured alive

The captured terrorist, Azam Amir Kasab told police his group was sent with a specific mission to target Israelis to avenge the Palestinians. That is why they targeted Nariman House (Chabad Center), the Times of India reports. Kasab said his comrades stayed there posing as Malaysian students.

The nine Jewish victims, including 7 Israelis, represent the largest group of foreign hostages murdered by the Islamist terrorists who held Mumbai under siege from Wednesday, Nov. 29 to Saturday.

The name of Ms Yocheved Harpaz, 59, mother of four from Givitayim joined the four victims from Chabad Center so far identified: Rabbi Gavriel, 29, and Rivka, 28, Holzman, taken hostage in the Chabad Center during their assault on Mumbai Wednesday, Nov. 26.

Their 2-year old son, Moshe, was brought to safety by his Indian nanny.

Two more victims identified were Betzion Chroman, 28, father of three, who held dual US-Israeli citizenship, and Leibisch Teitelbaum, an American from Brooklyn. Forensic pathologists from Israel were flown to India Sunday by an Israeli Air Force plane to help identify the others. With them were defense experts and officials to arrange the return of the remains to Israel and their burial.

Chabad Center was seized together with two big hotels and attacks on other high-profile targets across the city.

The Indian government estimates that some 610 hostages were rescued at the ravaged Oberoi and Taj Mahal Palace hotels and 174 were killed by the terrorists, most of them Indians

Indian fingers are pointing at Pakistan as investigators begin probing for the hand behind the uniquely pre-planned, orderly, commando-style assault by an estimated 30 terrorists. The singling out of foreign sites and US, British and Jewish victims is seen by many experts as a hallmark of an al Qaeda-led operation possibly in association with other groups.

Indian TV claims the gunmen traveled to Mumbai by sea from Karachi. A recurring name is that of Maulana Abdul Bari, an Indian based in Saudi Arabia who is the suspected bankroller of the assault. The Foreign Office in London denies the “British connection” highlighted by UK media, some of which say seven of the terrorists were Pakistan British citizens.

All counter-terror agencies stress the importance of long and exhaustive reconnaissance by the attackers. Some suggest “advance control rooms” may have been set up at the Taj Mahal and Oberoi hotels for prior reconnaissance and even to cache arms and ammunition.

Israel’s defense minister Ehud Barak also estimated the assault was carried out by 30 gunmen working in groups of seven who were in touch with additional elements in the city and linked to a command base, possibly of al Qaeda, in neighboring countries. The FBI has sent a team to join the Indian probe. The US and Israeli governments stress the need for more global cooperation and intelligence-sharing to help predict where the Islamist terrorists will strike next.

Atrocities from the 60-hour ordeal began coming to light Friday night, when Israeli defense minister said in a Channel 1 TV interview that some of the bodies bore signs that they had been bound hand and foot and two Israeli women had been killed hours before the men. The dramatic Indian helicopter-borne commando raid of Chabad Center, which caters to Israeli and Jewish visitors to the city, failed to save anyone in the building.

The outrage may not be over. Mumbai, India’s financial capital, was shut down Saturday - schools, shops, traffic - against a second wave of terror as police armed with machine guns patrolled the streets. Friday, Islamist gunmen returned to their first target, the city’s main rail station for a second attack. DEBKAfile reported earlier that some of the terrorists had remained on the loose away their first targets to continue their “mission.”

In New York, Friday night, Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky voiced the outrage of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement and conveyed condolences to the families of everyone murdered in Mumbai. NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said the atrocity reminds us of how connected the world is in the face of terror.

Indian investigators are examining a satellite phone and GPS map recovered from a trawler, the Kubar, floating in the Arabian Sea. The crew was missing from the vessel except for its master whose body was found beheaded with bound limbs.

Israel nearing wide-scale Gaza op

Following mortar attack on IDF base which left eight soldiers injured, deputy defense minister says ‘their provocations don’t leave us with much choice’. Likud MK Erdan suggests moving Palestinian prisoners to unfortified detention facility in Gaza vicinity

Published: 11.29.08, 13:13 / Israel News
Israel is nearing a wide-scale operation in the Gaza Strip, Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai said Saturday, several hours after eight Israel Defense Forces soldiers were injured in a mortar shell attack on the Nahal Oz base in southern Israel.

“There’s no doubt we’re getting closer to a wide-scale operation in Gaza, but it will be different from what took place in the past,” Vilnai said during an event in the southern city of Beersheba.

“The truce is important to us and to them, as we control the crossings and the other side is afraid of the IDF’s strength. But we must find the right time for an operation. Their provocations are not leaving us with much choice.”

The deputy defense minister rejected the possibility of evacuating the soldiers from the Nahal Oz base following the mortar attack, as the army did with the Zikim base last week. “We won’t vacate every place,” he said.

Addressing the negotiations with the Palestinians, Vilnai said, “Hamas is not a partner for a dialogue as long as it does not recognize us. The only vision we are facing at the moment is Abu Mazen (Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas), but the tragedy is that he’s getting weaker.

“We must know that the only solution is reaching an understanding with the Palestinians. We must work with every element on the Palestinian side we can talk to, but in Gaza there’s no one to talk to and the only language there is military power.”

As for the Islamic terror and the combined terrorist attacks in Mumbai, the deputy minister said, “This is a troublesome phenomenon. India is the biggest democracy in the world. The problem is Islamic terror which hits the entire world, and we are not just talking about the conflict between Jews and Palestinians.

“The extreme religious terror must worry the entire free world. They want to damage all the signs of democracy we know.”

Referring to Defense Minister Ehud Barak’s statement that Hizbullah has missiles which could reach Beersheba, Vilnai noted that he believes the Lebanese organization has missiles which could even reach the Negev desert town of Mitzpe Ramon.

As for the Labor Party’s deterioration in recent public opinion polls, he said, “Barak asked me to head the election campaign and I agreed. The most talented person to lead the State of Israel is Barak. The only one similar to him is (Likud Chairman) Benjamin Netanyahu.

“I don’t see the political map without Labor. We won’t disappear, and gaining less than 10 Knesset seats would be a disaster for us.”

MK Erdan: Time for creative solutions
Likud Knesset members also addressed the Nahal Oz mortar attack Saturday. MK Gilad Erdan even came up with an original solution, saying the defense minister must set up a temporary detention facility in the Gaza vicinity and jail Hamas and Islamic Jihad prisoners there.

Erdan demanded that the new facility won’t be fortified. “It’s time for Israel to initiate creative solutions and prove to the world that it’s determined to do anything in order to stop the terror and rocket fire from the Gaza Strip.

“If they don’t work to stop the fire, they should take into account that the rockets may hurt their men as well. When the government fails to fortify the south’s residents, there’s no reason to protect terrorists jailed in Israel,” he added.

MK Yuval Steinitz blamed the government for the deterioration in the security situation in southern Israel.

“The Olmert-Livni government’s security failure in the face of Gaza turns pale compared to the Second Lebanon War failure,” he said. “We missed the opportunity to stop the Hizbullah missile and terror threat in the north, but in the south we enabled the formation of Hizbullah 2 in the heart of the Negev.

“The government we’ll build after the elections will have to give Gaza an in-depth treatment which will halt the ongoing security deterioration in the south,” he said.

6 IDF soldiers wounded in mortar attack

Palestinians fire barrage of mortar shells on IDF base near Nahal Oz, one shell lands within base; wounded soldiers evacuated for medical treatment
Efrat Weiss
Published: 11.28.08, 22:02 / Israel News

Six IDF soldiers were injured Friday when a barrage of mortar shells was fired from Gaza towards an army base near the southern town of Nahal Oz. The troops were evacuated to receive medical treatment.

One of the mortars landed inside the base, and two others landed in nearby open spaces, in Shaar Ha Negev Regional Council. Another two landed in the vicinity of Netiv Haasara, but no injuries or damage were reported.

Earlier Friday four Palestinians were injured in clashes with IDF soldiers east of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. The soldiers opened fire when they discovered the gunmen attempting to plant an explosive device near the border fence.

At first Palestinian sources reported that one of the gunmen had been killed, but it was later revealed that he had merely lain on the ground until the fire had subsided, and then returned to his home unharmed.

Iran expands nuclear operations

Iran has expanded its controversial nuclear programme and now operates more than 5,000 uranium enrichment centrifuges, the country’s nuclear chief has said.

The figure released on Wednesday is a significant rise from the 4,000 Tehran said were operational in August at the Natanz plant in central Iran.

Gholamreza Aghazadeh, the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation, said Tehran had no intention of halting its nuclear operations over Western pressure and would continue to install centrifuges to produce fuel for future nuclear power plants.

US and EU leaders have accused Iran of using a civilian energy programme as a front to develop atomic weapons, despite a collective assessment made by 16 US spy agencies last year that it had ceased such activity in 2003.  Tehran has denied the claims.

Uranium enriched to low level is used to produce nuclear fuel but further enrichment can make it suitable for weapon use.

‘Good progress’

Iran has said it plans to move towards large-scale uranium enrichment that will ultimately involve 54,000 centrifuges, with a target of 9,000 operational by next year.

Aghazadeh said Iran aims to start electricity production at its first nuclear power plant - the Russian-built Bushehr facility - in mid-2009.

He said “good progress” has been made in constructing a 40 megawatt heavy-water reactor near Arak in central Iran.

“The heavy water plant is experiencing a production beyond its capacity,” Aghazadeh said without elaboration.

“The Arak complex will be used to make isotopes for medical and agricultural ends,” he said.

The West has repeatedly called on Iran to stop construction of the reactor, fearing it could be used as a second track toward building an atomic warhead.

Rocket launch

Iran also announced on Wednesday that it had successfully launched into space its second rocket - the Kavoshgar (Explorer) 2.

“The rocket was launched to register and send correct environmental data and [to test] separation of the engine from the body,” state radio said.

It said after reaching the lower reaches of space, the rocket returned to Earth on a parachute.

The first Kovoshgar rocket was launched in February.

The West fears Iran’s space programme may form part of a bid to build missiles that could carry warheads.

Iran’s refusal to halt its programmes has drawn three rounds of UN sanctions since 2006, as well as separate US measures.

Abbas Displays Map of “Palestine” Erasing Israel

This week the Palestinian Authority daily Al-Ayyam published a picture of Mahmoud Abbas, standing in front of a map of “Palestine” that covers all of Israel.

The Palestinian Authority flag is displayed above the map. Abbas was speaking from the “Headquarters of the Palestinian Presidency” in Ramallah, at the opening meeting of the PLO Central Council. This area is part of Abbas’ office complex.

The Al-Ayyam front page photo caption said: “The President speaks at the opening meeting of the [PLO] Central Council at the Headquarters of the Presidency in Ramallah.”

The Fatah controlled daily Al-Hayat Al-Jadida also carried a picture of Abbas in front of the same map.
